About

OH HI! I’m Laura, but a large chunk of friends/family call me Rah.

This is my personal site with a mash-up of creative jaunts and the goings on in my life.

I live with Dan, who is referred to as “my boyfriend” until we can be bothered getting around to eloping. I hate the word “partner” and “defacto”Oh my god we’re going to get married, like proper adults and stuff! We met while working on the same magazine back in 2000 and my life has been infinitely better ever since. We live above a shop in an area I refer to as Central Bohemia in Sydney’s inner west. We moved in here in May 2007 after living with Dan’s mum for 4 years. I love my in-laws just as much as my own family.

Our life is dominated by our cats; Elvis, a 6yo DSH with a penchant for my freshly-baked cupcakes and Bear, a 5yo Devon Rex cross who spends his days wishing dead birds would fall from the sky. We have reached the final stage of our Litter Kwitter training and when we graduate we will have a giant party and invite all of Sydney to watch us gloat about our brilliance of training the cats to pee and poop in the toilet like we do.

My middle name is Rose. I was born in Grafton – the Jacaranda city – as the result of an emergency caesarean because the umbilical cord was wrapped around my neck. I was in intensive care for three weeks. I have two older sisters and three beautiful nephews. Until I was 8, our family ran the local drive-in and have memories of a life full of popcorn, choc tops and changing film spools in the projector room. Mum and I moved to Sydney after Dad died of cancer in 1986, just after my eight birthday. Every day I fight being an ACOA; some days are harder than others.

I work a desk job for God. Seriously. While I’m a baptised Catholic, my faith has been tested for as long as I can remember and would call myself a hopeful agnostic. I love my job and love that I can accept my “status” and still work with some of the most genuine bible people I’ll ever know.

I’ve developed a reputation as a bit of a cupcake nutbag.

Being the internet nerd that I am, I also have a Flickr account (photo community), a Tumblelog account (directory of my favourite internet findings) a Twitter account (online verbal diarrhoea, essentially) and a RedBubble account (photo printing on card, tshirts, etc). There are other places where I like to “hang out” but it’s usually full of colourful language and best that I don’t expose you to such :o)

CREATIVITY

I’ve recently started my own web design business. I’m no expert but I know that there are people out there being ripped off with overpriced and/or absolutely disgusting web site design. I have a number of clients and happy to help you out. I do this is a hobby in addition to my day job; so I do this cause I love it and not because I need to pay the bills.

Check out my online portfolio at LRKane Creative.

In 2008 I was an official photographer for World Youth Day in Sydney and my photography was featured on the inside cover of the September 2008 edition of About Catholic Schools, a magazine with a circulation of over 80,000:
