Caturday: oh hai, is this your power cord?
You’re cool with my getting under your desk and unplugging all the cords, right?

It’s okay, I’m still cute!
Every Saturday (almost, anyway) I post a photo of my cats to celebrate Caturday. Why don’t you join in, too? rainbowtatt’s Caturday is not fussed in any way if any Dogurday participants want to join in :)
Loving Apple products again
With the (in)frequency of my posts, you’d think I’m trying to run another blog. And guest post on another. Remind me to tell you about the idea for another one that I think about when I can’t get to sleep at night.
Also, we’ve completed settlement for your suburban filing cabinet (anyone else get the Fight Club reference?) and my brain is a bit mushy with the adult responsibility of it all.
AND! I think I was bitten by a spider this week. Once on my leg and once on my bum. I’m waiting for both to start the Spiderman transformation. I’ll keep you posted.
But that’s not why I’m back on the blogging bandwagon tonight. I’ve been inspired by the adorable Kymmie and her “Try something new” meme:
While I had the hand-me-downs, I was getting back into the swing of Apple products again, the iOS, the apps and the finesse of the iPad. But now that I’ve had my own doesn’t-matter-if-I-scratch-it-cause-it’s -mine iPad for a week I. AM. IN. LOVE.
My productivity has skyrocketed this week. I tether to my phone when I’m on the road and I can catch up on tweets, my Google Reader, my emails and write blog posts for Smarter Admins. This week I wrote two posts in the car, while waiting for dinner dates. I started implementing better blogger social interaction during my lunch breaks. And then, when I’m done with the day, I watch episodes of Choccywoccydoodah on iView. While I’m in bed and Elvis is demanding the he sleeps in the crook of my arm. Elvis loves watching iView with me.
iPad love – I has it!

Psst, wanna win?
Over on Smarter Admins, I’ve got a $100 Westfield gift card up for grabs.
The prize is GOOD (the best giveaway I’ve scored for Smarter Admins yet).
You know you wanna enter :)

Things I learned from not attending the @problogger Training Day #pbevent
So, sure, I didn’t go along to the Problogger Training Day this week. But that doesn’t mean that I didn’t learn anything from missing out :)
With thanks to the wonders of modern technology I was able to keep up with the Training Day pretty well
- #pbevent Twitter stream
Though I had to wait until breaktimes to read the stream, I was able to pick up on some of the key themes of certain presentations. Like Darren’s emphasis on putting your heart into blogging. And Mrs Woog’s authenticity in her content. - Blogs of presenters and panel members
I checked out the web sites of the presenters, panel members and attendees, many of which I’d either not heard of, or I’d not spent a lot of time on their sites. I’ve checked out Copyblogger and downloaded some free ebooks from Chris Garrett‘s site (and from Pint-Sized Sites, too). The ebooks have been downloaded onto my iPad so I can read them during the week. I cheated and started reading Pint-Sized Sites’ Your Website is Ugly and am loving the little tidbits I’m picking up already. Lots of note-writing about “above the fold”, “reader profiles” and “solving problems for your readers”. It’s not necessarily rocket science, but so so handy to have spelled out to me. - Roundup blog posts by attendees
I found Kelly Exter‘s posts about her #pbevent experience to be really helpful and Nobashake has a link up for follow-up posts as well - Hitting up my friends who got to go along :)
I’ve been chatting online, at the supermarket (though that was a complete fluke) and I’m taking another out for coffee to get the low down on the whole shebang
I’ve sat down for a good half hour this afternoon and thought through the tips and tidbits that I’ve picked up around the traps. Here’s a start to what I’ve written down so far:
Why I’m blogging
My personal blog is just an outlet for my thoughts and memories. It exists for my own selfish reasons and I enjoy looking back on old posts (I always laugh at them).
My business blog exists because I know it’s a good idea, that there’s a need for it. It’s a topic I’m passionate about, that I’m good at. I want to use Smarter Admins to extend myself in my day job, but also to extend my readers. I’ve already been experimenting with changes to my “voice” on Smarter Admins and I think I’m getting closer to what I’m comfortable with… less stuck-up, less matronly, more rah :) I struggle often with my motivation for the blog, for content, for direction – I need to focus, pronto.
My blog design is great
Jarod and Liz did a fan-bloody-tastic job of designing Smarter Admins for me (I’m so proud to be one of their first clients in their new venture) and it will stay largely as-is. I’ve realised that I need to focus on what’s “above the fold”. Make it easier for readers to see that I’ve got the solution they need. Get the content to match the great design.
Finding readers
This is a tricky one for me, because I’m sure that many potential Smarter Admins readers don’t read blogs, don’t access Facebook/Twitter at work and sure as hell don’t Google things like “How do I correctly fold a piece of paper to fit a DL envelope”. I have some strategies that I’ve started putting into place to find the readers who are online, but there’s a whole other level needed to really break into the market I’m looking to nab. Sadly, I think this will need $$ investment :( In the meantime I’m going to implement better strategies for the readers I already have, then go from there.
Making money
I don’t want to think too much about making money from Smarter Admins yet. The site is only a few months old and it’s way too early for me to be earning a crust from it. But I’ve picked up on some great tips that will be really helpful when the time comes to start thinking about monetising Smarter Admins. One day :)

I’ve also made a vow to bloody well go to the next Problogger Training Day. I’m saving my pennies already!
Green Gratefuls
I have a confession to make. I’m using Maxabella’s Saturday Gratefuls to ward off the green-eyed monster. Yesterday was the Problogger Training Day in Melbourne and for a bunch of reasons (like having a day job and almost-a-mortgage), I didn’t go. Turns out I missed an awesome chance to learn from blogging pros and now I’m kicking myself and being a general sooky-la-la about it.
But in the new mindset I’m training myself into (which I’ll explain in a little bit), I’m focusing on positives and thinking of all the reasons I’m grateful this week.
My health and Dr Joe
Dr Joe booked a blood test for me and I visited him this week to get the results. He was thrilled to be able to tell me that I don’t have leukaemia or thyroid cancer but put me on a strict diet of iron and vitamin D pills for 3 months to get my levels up. Dr Joe is my favourite doctor and I get him for free with thanks to bulk billing and the Australian Medicare system.
Internet friends
On Wednesday night we got to have dinner with our neighbours Jarod and Liz with celebrity guests Fern and Dani. I have fantastic taste when it comes to Internet friends, they’re funny, cute and a naughty sense of humour :) it’s so nice to hang out with people who have no problem with talking about blogging and twitter.
Motivation and inspiration
After a few weeks of feeling (and being) unfocused, overwhelmed and generally meh, I’ve started making a concerted effort to get on top of my game. There are two sources that have been a great help so far – Julie Parker’s Beautiful You page on Facecrackbook page and the Tiny Buddha web site. They’ve been really inspiring and thought-provoking, but in a way that’s gentler (yet more empowering) than a therapist. I’m already noticing a difference in my coping mechanisms and my acceptance of circumstances. My motivation is slowly (but surely) returning.
The catharsis of decluttering
In switching out my winter/summer wardrobe last night, I was ruthless in my culling. With us moving into the new place in the next few months, we have a LOT of crap to get rid of, including clothes. I ended up with three overflowing garbage bags of clothes to donate to charity and a small bag of clothes that I’ll take to a clothes-swap-slumber-party I’m going to next month. The three bags are sitting at the back door, waiting for me to drag them into the car and my wardrobe is better organised, less cluttered and it feels fantastic to have turfed so. much. stuff.

As if to prove my own point, I’m already feeling better than when I started writing this blog post :) Hurrah!
