How I keep up with blogs

I’m noticing more and more lately that fellow bloggers are struggling to keep up with their RSS feeds.

Lots of people that I follow on Twitter have been saying this lately. Some are even asking people to RT their blog posts so that they can keep up. Call me old fashioned, but I see enough RTs of blog posts as it is (some bloggers who I respect seem to RT every 15 minutes, which – tangent – can get annoying). TBH, I’m a shy petal when it comes to self-promotion, and don’t like RTing my own horn unless I really think it’s worthwhile

(Insert commentary on why I’m not a ‘mainstream success’ blogger here)

:)

Anyways, so while I’m not a huge expert on all this, I offer you my trick… folders within Google Reader.

If you don’t use Google Reader yet… I can’t recommend it enough. I follow hundreds of blogs and this system seems to work for me… Styling You documented her love of Google Reader here.

FOLDERS.

I have my RSS feeds categorised into folders – and the web-based version of Google Reader allows you to manually order those folders (else, number them so they appear in order of priority).

Exhibit A:

So my folder called “AAA” contains the blogs that I can’t function without knowing they’ve posted something (and, of course, my own blogs that I work on). This is a small list, mostly made up of real-life friends and whatnot.

Then my “People blogs” folder has blogs that are high up on my list, and mightn’t fit into mum/food/craft/etc blogging category.

I have those I’ve met at blog meets in another folder, as well as the bloggers who attended the Aussie Bloggers Conference earlier this year.

So it’s a very simple system that I have going on, but it works for me. And it’s probably not earth-shattering information for most of you, but I wanted to share my anal-retentive organisation skills in case it can help you out :)

How do you organise your RSS feeds? Do you use RSS feeds?

I feel very inadequate here… I hang my head in shame and admit I use Safari with a sort of folder system (cool people’s blogs, food, funnies are about my limits!) but I would love to start using google reader. Is there an easy way to import bookmarks that you know of?

I use google reader and would be completely lost without it.

That being said, I have 490 unread items from the long weekend and am afraid!
